The necessary procedures and documents for bringing cats and dogs to the Australia:
Microchipping: The Australian government requires all imported cats and dogs to have an ISO microchip.
Rabies and other vaccinations: Both cats and dogs need to receive rabies vaccination. Dogs may also be vaccinated against Leptospira interrogans serovar Canicola. If your dog will not receive this vaccination, it needs to do the testing for Leptospira canicola(Leptospirosis)) in the second blood test.
Identity verification: Before blood sampling for RNATT, have your pet’s identity verified at Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD). Pets that have had their identity verified using this process prior to collection of blood for the RNATT are eligible for 10 days post entry quarantine upon arrival into Australia. Otherwise, your pets will need to undergo 30 days post entry quarantine upon arrival into Australia.
Rabies neutralising antibody titre test (RNATT): Around a month after rabies vaccination, and between 180 days and 240 days before the date of export, a veterinarian will collect blood sample for the RNATT. Your pets are not eligible for export to Australia until at least 180 days after the blood sample arrives at the lab for this RNAT test (with a satisfactory result). If your pet fails the test, it will be re-vaccinated and repeat the testing process.
Application for RNATT Declaration: Provide original copies of RNATT report, vaccination record, dog license (for dog only), identity verification etc. to AFCD for issuing the RNATT declaration.
Application of import permit: At least 180 days before the proposed date of export, submit your import permit application. The supporting documents include vaccination record, RNATT declaration, RNATT lab report, identity verification etc.
Post entry quarantine (PEQ) facility booking: After receiving the import permit, you may start booking the PEQ for your pet. The PEQ facility is in Melbourne. If your final destination is not Melbourne, you want to prearrange transportation or delivery for your pet after the PEQ.
Second blood test (for dogs only): With 45 days before the date of export, all dogs must take the testing for Leishmania infantum (Leishmaniosis). If your dog is not desexed, it must take the testing for Brucella canis (Brucellosis). If your dog is not vaccinated against Leptospira interrogans serovar Canicola, it must take the testing for Leptospira Canicola (Leptospirosis).
Parasite Treatments: Dogs and cats must undergo external parasite treatments at least 30 days before export. According to the manufacturer's instructions, repeated treatment may be required until export. In addition, cats and dogs must undergo internal parasite treatments twice within 45 days before export. The two treatments must be 14 days apart. The second treatment must be completed within five days before departure.
Veterinary Health Certificate: A veterinarian will issue an official health certificate to pets that have completed the final health examination.
AFCD endorsement: Within 5 days of export, provide original copies of veterinary health certificate, blood test report, vaccination record, dog license (for dogs only), import permit, identity verification, RNATT declaration etc to AFCD. AFCD will verify all the information. An official government veterinarian will then issue an official health certificate.
